Keynote Speaker:  Adam Liptak

New York Times Columnist and lawyer Adam Liptak will join the BBA as keynote speaker of the 2014 Annual Meeting Luncheon.  Mr. Liptak has covered Supreme Court news since 2008 and his column “Sidebar” on developments in the law has been featured since 2007.  His series “American Exception”, which detailed the differences in the U.S. legal system in comparison with other developed nations, was named a finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in explanatory reporting.

BBA Lifetime Achievement Award:  Edward J. Barshak

“His work in the profession as an expert trial lawyer and as a steadfast advocate for legal services makes him a role model for all….”  BBA President-Elect Julia Huston

The BBA President’s Award will be presented to Edward J. Barshak in recognition of his service to the bar and his dedication to the equal and fair administration of justice.  As President of the BBA from 1974-1976, Mr. Barshak led the bar in educating the public about the desegregation movement and busing, made legal services a priority and called for a comprehensive review of the judicial nominating process.

Mr. Barshak is the senior trial attorney at Sugarman, Rogers, Barshak & Cohen, P.C.  He has been awarded the Boston Branch NAACP Special Award for Legal Assistance on a Continuing Basis and the William O. Douglas First Amendment Freedom Award by the Anti-Defamation League. 

 BBA President’s Award:  Statewide Task Force to Expand Civil Legal Aid in Massachusetts

The BBA President’s Award will be presented to the members and firms who have worked on the BBA’s Statewide Task Force to Expand Civil Legal Aid in Massachusetts in recognition of their service and dedication in working to determine the unmet need for civil legal aid across the state and examining the most cost effective way to meet that need.
