13th Annual Walk to the Hill for Civil Legal Aid

Join the Mass LGBTQ Bar Association at the 13th Annual Walk to the Hill for Civil Legal Aid on January 26, 2012, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the State House - Great Hall and protect funding for legal aid programs.  Legal aid is in crisis and private bar support is more important than ever before.  Plummeting interest rates combined with other factors have resulted in a dramatic 78 percent decline in Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC) income from the Interest of Lawyers’ Trust Accounts (IOLTA) program.  As a result, MLAC has cut its grants to legal aid programs by 56 percent since FY 08.  At the same time, the number of families in need of pro bono assistance has increased by 11 percent and legal aid has lost 30 percent of its staff.

When: The event will be held Thursday, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.in the Great Hall at the State House.

What we will do there: We will meet with our local legislators. You will receive talking points and help identifying your local state senators and representatives at the State House.  There will also be a brief speaking program led by Justice Ralph D. Gants.

11 to 11:30 a.m. - Registration.
